Some Fascinating Stories You Didn’t Know About Roller Shades

The origin of Venetian blinds, often referred to as traditional slated window blinds, can be traced back to trade expeditions between Venice and Persia from 1100 to 1500. Despite the name, they did not originate in Venice but were introduced by merchants. Egyptians used riverbank reeds and animal hides for blinds long before Christ, evolving into fabric for better maintenance. Marble window coverings with slats were discovered in Pompeii, providing shade, privacy, and weather protection. These marble slats were later replaced by wood.

During the construction of the Great Coliseum in Rome, citizens used damp cloths and later a retractable canvas called a velarium for shading. This marked the beginning of what we now know as Roman Shades.

Shutters made their way to the New World, gaining popularity in New England. The term ‘plantation shutters’ originated from white-painted shutters in Southern plantation mansions.

Window shades, predecessors to roller shades, appeared in Europe in the 1780s. Decorative designs were hand-painted on translucent cloth or paper, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir even painted window shades before his famous art.

The tilt mechanism, patented by John Hampson in 1841, is widely used in blinds today. Natural shades like bamboo and wood reduce carbon dioxide in homes even after being cut and formed into window coverings or furniture.

Cellular shades with a honeycomb structure are effective energy-saving window coverings, creating a barrier against heat loss or gain.

Window treatments have left their mark in popular culture, with notable references in movies like Gone With the Wind and The Sound of Music. Famous art pieces like Lorenzo Lotto’s Young Man against a White Curtain and Edmund C. Tarbell’s The Venetian Blind feature blinds and draperies.

On a serious note, from 1990 to 2015, around 17,000 children under 6 were treated for window-blind-related injuries. Window blind cords, especially entanglement, were associated with a significant number of hospitalizations and deaths. Cordless window treatments are recommended to prevent these incidents, promoting child safety.
